GSAT-03 or EDUSAT | Specially for serving the Education Sector

 GSAT-03 ( EDUSAT )

GSAT-03 Popularity known as EDUSAT was the first educational satellite built especially to serve educational sector. This Satellite Helped students a lot by providing access to distance learning from primary School level to higher studies. EDUSAT was successfully launched by India’s GSLV-F01 from SDSC SHAR on 20 September 2004.

This Satellite was located at 74° East longitude along with KALPANA-1 and INSAT-3C. EDUSAT carried 6 Ku band and 6 C band transponders. EDUSAT employed many new technologies when compared to it’s preceding Satellites. This Satellite was built around I-2k which is one of the standardized Satellite Buses of India.

EDUSAT had a multiple spot beam antenna with 1.2m reflector to direct precisely the Ku band spot beams towards their intended regions of India, a dual core bent heat pipe for thermal control, high efficiency multi-junction solar cells and an improved thruster configuration for optimized propellant use for orbit and orientation maintenance. The satellite used radiatively cooled Ku band Travelling Wave Tube Amplifiers (TWTAs) and dielectrically loaded C-band DE-Multiplexer for its communication payloads.

The Total weight of this Mission was 1950 Kg. This Satellite got Deactivated on 30 September 2010 and it was disposed by ISRO into Graveyard orbit. Missile Man of India, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated India’s first Broadband network on EDUSAT for School Students on 28 July 2005 in Thiruvananthapuram. And Kerala demonstrated how this Satellite could Successfully used to empower Teachers. In this way EDUSAT provided connectivity to schools, colleges and higher levels of education and also supported non-formal education including development communication.
